South Asian Modernists

Quiet day at the office yesterday, so I wandered up to the mezzanine floor to check out the Cecily Brown exhibition but got no further than the South Asian Modernists 1953-1963. Wonderful oil paintings collected by Victor Musgrave for his experimental Gallery One, open for ten years in London.  From before he met Monika Kinley in 1977 and before the start of their Outsider Art Collection which is now part of the Whitworth collections.

The art in this exhibition explores the works of Pakistani and Indian artists who worked with Victor Musgrave between 1953-63. It has been curated in collaboration with Amrita Jhaveri, a dynamic collector, curator and dealer of modern and contemporary Asian art. The works have been loaned by several Private Collectors, The Hepworth Wakefield, NPG, Harewood House, the Grovenor Gallery & a video from the British Library of an interview with John Kasmin discussing Gallery One, Victor Musgrave and the artists.

I missed the panel discussion on 7th December with Amrita Jhaveri and daughters of two of the artists. Have we had a Look-Club, have I missed that too? There is definitely a bohemian atmosphere about this exhibition that caught my attention.
